Languages
At Little Stanion Primary School our chosen language of study is Spanish. Children have the opportunity to develop their Spanish language skills as well as learn about Spanish culture and traditions. Spanish is taught for an hour weekly every other half term from Year 3 to Year 6. The curriculum was designed to progress through the different year groups in line with the DfE KS2 languages programme of study.
The national curriculum aims to ensure that pupils;
The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources Speak with confidence, fluency, and spontaneity.
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
By the end of KS2 pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
Long term maps were designed in line with the national curriculum to show the disciplinary skills and the subject knowledge to be taught in what year group. It is designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills progressively whilst fostering a love for languages and an appreciation of rich diversity of the world.
Intent –
At Little Stanion Primary School, our intent for teaching Spanish is to ignite curiosity, promote cultural understanding, and lay the foundations for lifelong language learning. We believe that learning a modern foreign language opens doors to new experiences and broadens our pupils’ horizons beyond the classroom.
Through high-quality teaching of Spanish, we aim to:
- Foster enjoyment of language learning through interactive, engaging and purposeful activities, such as songs, games, role-play and storytelling.
- Develop confident communicators, enabling pupils to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish with increasing fluency.
- Build cultural awareness, introducing pupils to traditions, celebrations and ways of life in Spanish-speaking countries.
- Embed language learning skills that support pupils’ literacy, memory, and oracy, as well as prepare them for further language study in secondary school.
We ensure progression, with clear, structured learning that builds vocabulary, grammar and conversational skills across Key Stage 2. Our Spanish curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all learners. It is designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills progressively, while fostering a love for languages and an appreciation of the rich diversity of our world.
Implementation
At Little Stanion Primary School, Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 for one hour every other half term. Our approach ensures that language learning is fun, inclusive, and accessible to all, while reflecting our core values of opportunities, diversity, and aspirations.
We believe that learning a modern foreign language provides rich opportunities for children to develop new skills, explore new ways of thinking, and build confidence in communication. Spanish lessons are carefully planned to be interactive and engaging, using PowerPoints, songs, games, and videos to model accurate pronunciation and make learning memorable.
Impact
The teaching of Spanish at Little Stanion Primary has a positive and lasting impact on our pupils. It broadens their horizons and fosters a love of language learning, giving them the opportunity to develop communication skills, memory, and confidence in a new and exciting context. By exploring the cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries, pupils gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity, learning to respect different ways of life and celebrate global connections. Spanish also inspires children to aim high and see themselves as capable learners with the potential to succeed beyond their immediate environment. It nurtures their aspirations, encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a belief in their ability to embrace new challenges—skills that support them across the curriculum and into the future.
